Question 1
Read the passage given below and summarize it using one sentence. Type your response in the box at the bottom of the screen. You have 10 minutes to finish this task. Your response will be judged on the quality of your answer.
Esperanto is a language created by Ludovic Lazarus Zamenhof (1859-1917), a Jew who was born on the frontier between Russia and Poland. He realized that language barriers helped to maintain and even to aggravate differences and difficulties between nations, and conceived Esperanto as an international language easily learned and spoken by everybody. The language’s name (meaning “a person who hopes”) comes from the pseudonym Zamenhof used for his first book Internacia Lingyo which was translated to English as Dr. Esperanto’s International Language. Generally speaking, learning Esperanto takes from one-twentieth to one-fifth of the time needed to learn a national language. It is used by the Universala Esperants-Asocio (founded 1908) which has headquarters in Rotterdam, members in 85 countries, 50 national associations, and about 20 professional international associations. Numerous people who do not belong to official organizations also speak the language. In 1963 a professor from Columbia University suggested that Esperanto was spoken by 8 million people. Esperanto is a phonetic language with no irregularities of grammar. The roots of words were taken from national languages, so many can be recognized on sight. Many great works of literature have been written in the language.
Question 2
Read the passage given below and summarize it using one sentence. Type your response in the box at the bottom of the screen. You have 10 minutes to finish this task. Your response will be judged on the quality of your answer.
One of the most famous American novels of all times is The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The story of this literature classic basically revolves around the lifestyle of new rich people from the 1920s, whose troubles seemed to have been very well understood by the author, who noticed how they were degraded by greed and were actually unhappy and unfulfilled. Similar to his previous works, The Great Gatsby is neat and well crafted. Thus, according to some experts, the greatness of the novel isn’t a product of its characters being incredibly likeable, since they are considered by them as rather boring. What they feel Fitzgerald did was to manage the language in such a way that it has a pace, a certain rhythm one can follow. Also, the descriptions offered by the author are regarded as beautiful. But it does have powerful characters, such as Jay Gatsby himself, a man tired of the world and, ultimately, just looking for love. His character is even stronger than Nick Carraway’s, the college graduate who belongs to this eccentric world of excess, but at the same time is clearly separated from it, and who is the narrator of the story.
Question 3
Read the passage given below and summarize it using one sentence. Type your response in the box at the bottom of the screen. You have 10 minutes to finish this task. Your response will be judged on the quality of your answer.
The history of marketers seeking the advice of physicists is a short one, but an understanding of the Theory of Resonance may give communications experts the edge. Resonance Theory explains the curious phenomenon of how very small pebbles dropped into a pond can create bigger waves than a large brick. The brick makes a decent splash but its ripples peter out quickly. A tiny pebble dropped into the same pond, followed by another, then another, then another, all timed carefully, will create ripples that build into small waves.
As Dr Carlo Contaldi: a physicist at Imperial College London, explains, a small amount of energy committed at just the right intervals – the ‘natural frequency’ – creates a cumulatively large effect. Media consultant Paul Bay believes that just as with pebbles in a pond, a carefully choreographed and meticulously timed stream of communication will have a more lasting effect than a sporadic big splash during prime time TV breaks.
Innocent is testament to the power of pebbles. Until last year, the maker of smoothies had never advertised on TV. instead dripfeeding the market with endless ingenious marketing ploys – from annotating its drinks labels with quirky messages to hosting its own music festival, Fruit stock. The company sent a constant stream of messages rather than communicating through the occasional big and expensive noise.
So, whether you’re trying to make waves in the laboratory or in the media: the people in white coats would advise a little and often. A big budget is not the prerequisite of success.
