Contrary to the majority of nations from the west of Europe, at least until the 1950s, Spain had never undergone a great industrial revolution which would have changed its economy from one of agriculture and handicrafts to one of industry. In the early modern era, Spaniards sought wealth and empower abroad, even in the European continent or the newly discovered lands of North and South America, Africa, and the Far East, to a greater extent than the entrepreneurs from other countries in western Europe. The Spanish Empire of the 16th century relied on its shares in Africa, North and South America, and Europe itself. Moreover, metropolitan Spain was a major element in the great political, religious, and economic redeployment then happening in Europe. Spain waged worth throughout most of the 16th century using the whole world as its stage. From the mid-16th century to the mid-17th century the national debt was defaulted at least six times, causing very harmful effects on the nation’s banking system and making the foreign creditors of the Spanish crown and government suffer significant losses.
A difference between Spain and the west of Europe is that before the second half of the 20th century this nation had not had an industrial revolution which could have changed its economy because Spain had depended for hundreds of years on other territories such as America, Africa, and the Far East to survive. Furthermore, Spain had been involved in wars with other countries — especially throughout the 16th century –, which prevented it from having a healthy banking system.
Question 2
You will hear a lecture. After listening to the lecture, in 6 seconds, please speak and retell what you have just heard from the lecture in your own words. You will have 40 seconds to give your response.
Way up in the stratosphere -one of the layers in our atmosphere-, about ten to thirty miles above Earth, ozone molecules protect our planet from damaging ultraviolet radiation. However, in the troposphere, which is ten miles above Earth or below, those same molecules become a potent greenhouse gas, meaning that they are poisonous. These tropospheric ozone molecules form mainly from reactions between certain emissions from fossil-fuel combustion, sunlight, and water, and their levels have risen by about 40 per cent between the years 1890 and 1990. This increase has not been uniform, though. Levels of ozone molecules in the troposphere began to rise gradually before the 1950s but continued to do so more quickly thereafter thanks to the overwhelming industrialization that has taken place across the developed world. Higher levels of ozone, for example, prevail in regions surrounding industrial centers and in areas prone to forest fires, where substantial quantities of its precursor chemicals are released.
There are ozone molecules in both the stratosphere and in the troposphere, but the ones in the latter layer of our atmosphere are poisonous, while the first ones protect us from ultraviolet rays. Ozone molecules in the troposphere are the product of the combination of fossil-fuel combustion emissions, sunlight, and water. Sadly, due to the industrialization of our world, there numbers have increased significantly during the last hundred years, namely between 1890 and 1990.
Question 3

Balayage, would you say that economic globalization is a good or bad thing for the poor in India?
I think it’s difficult to make a sweeping generalization, globalization of the variety that we are now witnessing is certainly doing a lot of damage to the poor.
what do you mean by that?
If I straight away go to the Indian context, then I must say that during the past few years, destitution in India has tremendously increased, destitution especially among the excluded groups, by excluded groups, I mean the untouchables who are called as the Dalits, the tribals or the indigenous peoples, the Muslims, the most backward communities, the informal sector
Can you blame globalization for that?
Yes, globalization is unfortunately accurate.
But they have always been discriminated against if you look at the history of India
Yes, social discrimination they have always had, I am not attributing that to globalization, but I’m talking of their livelihood, increasingly they are being deprived of their livelihood.
In what way has globalization has caused that?
That’s because globalization, for example, has opened up the doors for all kinds of exploitation, the natural resources of India, the minerals wealth of India, is being you know plundered in an unprecedented manner.
The lecture was about main definitions of globalization. First of all, it would mean international communication and trading between countries, which consequently leads to a significant growth in travelling and the relationship of international companies. Secondly, the speaker stressed about the importance of having an integrated economy strategy, which increases the interdependence between the economies of different countries. Finally, he explained about transaction, consuming and producing goods.
