Question 1

Appendicitis is _______ among children and young people, and the condition is the most common cause of emergency abdominal surgery in the world.

One third of children affected have a more _______ form of appendicitis which requires a longer hospital stay and sometimes several surgeries. It is not yet clear why some children are _______ by this more serious form of appendicitis, nor whether it is possible to prevent it.

One theory holds that complicated appendicitis depends on the body’s immunological response differing to the response in cases of uncomplicated appendicitis. According to this theory, children with allergies have a _______ risk of contracting complicated appendicitis, because their immunological _______ is different from that of non-allergic children. However, this had not been investigated more closely until now.

Options:

considerable, complicated, conflicted, widespread, affected, longer, shorter, response, lower

Question 2

The expedition was an ________ study of hydrothermal and gas plumes, with researchers using advanced technology including 4K deep-sea underwater cameras and radiation tracking devices, as well as sediment and fluid samplers working via a ________ operated vehicle, ROV SuBastian. To get a true measure of methane and other ________ substances existing in the deep sea, scientists need to capture the samples at the source. The scientists were able to do this with a unique osmo sampler, a device that draws hydrothermal fluids into small capillary-like tubing, mounted onto the ROV. Several other in-situ experiments were ________, including a high throughput water filtration for viruses that allowed the team to ________ processing bias.

Options:

reduce, overshadowed, inflate, unprecedented, performed, volatile, reflect, virtually, remotely

Question 3

RNA and DNA are ________ very similar, but chemists have never been able to show how the one could have been converted to the other on the early Earth, except with the help of enzymes ________ by early organisms. Due in part to this lack of a demonstrated pre-life or “pre-biotic” chemical path connecting RNA to DNA, ________ in this field have been inclined to think that the simpler, more versatile one, RNA, was the basis for the first life forms — or at least for an early stage of life prior to the ________ of DNA. RNA is able to store genetic information as DNA can, is able to catalyze biochemical reactions as protein enzymes can, and otherwise probably could have performed the basic ________ tasks that would have been necessary in the first life forms.

 Options:

approximately, biological, enhanced, researchers, emergence, produced, chemically, ethical

Question 4

The startling extent to which violent wild fires, similar to those that _______ large swathes of California recently, affect forests and crops way beyond the boundaries of the blaze has been revealed.

A _______ new study by Professor Nadine Unger of the University of Exeter and Professor Xu Yue of the Institute of Atmospheric Physics in Beijing, has _______ that pollutants released by the devastating wild fires can affect crop and vegetation growth hundreds of kilometres from the fire impact zone.

The study examined how ozone and aerosols — two by-product pollutants of wildfires — influences healthy plant growth in areas that are seemingly unaffected by the _______ natural disasters.

It found that there was a significant reduction in plant productivity in areas far away from the fire’s borders. The study _______ that fire pollution could pose an increasing threat to regional, and even global, productivity in the warming future world.

Options:

destructive, sanctioned, ravaged, suggests, concealed, revealed, suggested, pioneering, obstructive

Question 5

The direct link between the surface meltwater and the _______ of a lake at the base of the ice has never been seen before. Over the last few years the number of lakes on the surface of the Greenland ice sheet has greatly increased. Surface lakes are also _______ much farther inland at higher altitudes than in the past. If this mechanism of transferring water and warmth from the surface lakes to the bottom of the ice sheet is common then the Greenland Ice Sheet is likely to respond more _______ to climate change than is currently predicted.

The Greenland ice sheet comprises about 80 percent of the land mass of Greenland and previous studies have _______ that the ice sheet is melting at a faster rate due to climate change. The movement of meltwater beneath the ice sheet, from the interior to the ocean, is the topic of many investigations as it can control the speed at which the ice sheet moves. This is the first study to document that surface water can _______ to the bottom of an ice cap and be trapped in place. Researchers say this process could also occur at other large bodies of ice.

Options:

documented, documents, filling, reactively, rapidly, penetrate, overcome, fulfilling, occurring
